As a mother and a childcare coach, I’ve often been surprised and, frankly, alarmed by the number of families who will invite a new caregiver into their homes based solely on a referral—without ever checking references, certifications, or conducting a background check.


I personally can’t tell you how many times I’ve been contacted by families referred to me by one of my regular clients, only to find that they haven’t taken any steps to ensure my qualifications or background have been properly vetted. This situation is unsettling, not just as a professional but also as a mother who understands the risks involved. No matter how trustworthy a referral may seem, there are potential risks that only a thorough background check can uncover, and it is essential for parents to be proactive in securing their child’s safety.

This check includes fingerprinting, and the results will show if the caregiver has been involved in any criminal activities. California also offers Trustline certification which is the top clearance for the state.

- Federal Background Check (FBI Check)

To get a broader picture of an individual’s criminal history, especially if they have lived in multiple states, a federal FBI background check can be conducted. This will cover any federal offenses and provide a comprehensive look at their criminal past.


- National Sex Offender Registry

This is an essential part of any background check. It can help you identify whether the individual has any history of sex offenses. This database is publicly available and should always be checked when hiring a caregiver for your child.


2. Reference Checks


Even with a formal background check, it’s crucial to reach out to personal references. Contact previous employers, other families who have used the caregiver’s services, and personal acquaintances to get a clearer picture of the person’s character and reliability. Make sure you are speaking with a real person who can validate their experience. As we saw during the pandemic with underqualifed nannies, references can be faked, so always opt for a real person.

Additionally, you may want to ask if they have experience with children who have specific needs, such as those with allergies, special education requirements, or medical conditions.

If the nanny or babysitter will be transporting your children, make sure to verify their driving record. You can request this through your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Ensuring that they have a clean driving record will minimize the risk of accidents or unsafe driving when transporting your children.


The Loopholes in Care.com’s Background Checks


Many parents turn to websites like Care.com to find babysitters or nannies. While Care.com does conduct background checks through a third-party vendor, it's important to understand that these checks may not be as reliable as some believe. There are a few loopholes to be aware of:


- Incomplete or Limited Criminal Records

The background checks offered by Care.com may not include a complete picture of a potential caregiver’s criminal history, especially if the individual has lived in multiple states. Sometimes only partial records are provided, leaving gaps in the information available.


- No Sex Offender Registry Check by Default

While Care.com offers background checks, they may not always include a sex offender registry check, which is crucial when hiring someone to care for your children.


- Verification Issues

Some caregivers may have discrepancies in their records that are not immediately apparent in the background check. While Care.com’s checks are helpful, they can’t guarantee that everything is accurately reported, especially when there are inconsistent or incomplete data entries.


Affordable Alternatives for Background Checks


If you cannot afford a full placement service through a nanny agency, many agencies offer background check services on an a la carte basis. This allows you to conduct a professional check without paying for the entire placement process. This is a more affordable option and can give you the confidence you need to hire the right caregiver for your family.


Conclusion: Don’t Skip the Background Check


As both a mother and childcare professional, I cannot stress enough how important it is to perform a background check when hiring a nanny or babysitter, regardless of whether they come highly recommended. Even the most glowing referrals cannot replace the critical information that a background check provides. By taking the time to properly vet your caregiver, you are ensuring the safety of your children, protecting your family, and providing yourself with peace of mind.
